Big Peckers

This is a massive old maple tree on our front lawn. As the snow started to melt, we noticed the rather huge pile of what looked like sawdust at the base of the tree. We couldn't imagine how that happened because it looked like someone had tried to cut the tree down with a chainsaw. So we decided to investigate and found out that we have a pair of pileated woodpeckers in our yard.

Pileated woodpeckers are gigantic (a good two feet tall) and have a big Woody Woodpecker shock of red feathers on the top of their head. They look better suited for an Amazonian jungle than Lincoln. Apparently they quite like it here...
