The Maliseet Trail

On Saturday, we headed off to the bustling metropolis of Meductic (there were, I kid you not, two old men sitting in rocking chairs at the Irving) for a little hike through the woods on the Maliseet Trail. After about 40 minutes we came to the falls - these pictures do it little justice. They are about 30m high and the roar coming off of them is impressive. Actually, the whole experience was pretty spectacular. Apparently the falls are most impressive during the spring run-off, so if you get a chance, you really should check it out.

A great book to have when you are bored and don't feel like forking over a lot of cash to be entertained is "A Hiking Guide To New Brunswick" by Marianne and H.A. Eiselt (who I coincidentally used to wait on at Pizza Hut on a weekly basis-I can still remember what they always ordered-why does useless info like this never leave our brains?). It is a gem of a little book-easy directions, good indicators of the degree of challenge to the trail and they point out interesting things that you can see along the way. A stroll through the woods is a nice way to spend an afternoon in New Brunswick and it has the added bonus of making your kids sleep well that night.

Big Peckers

This is a massive old maple tree on our front lawn. As the snow started to melt, we noticed the rather huge pile of what looked like sawdust at the base of the tree. We couldn't imagine how that happened because it looked like someone had tried to cut the tree down with a chainsaw. So we decided to investigate and found out that we have a pair of pileated woodpeckers in our yard.

Pileated woodpeckers are gigantic (a good two feet tall) and have a big Woody Woodpecker shock of red feathers on the top of their head. They look better suited for an Amazonian jungle than Lincoln. Apparently they quite like it here...

As we walked closer, we could see that a woodpecker had made a considerable size hole on this side of the tree. It seemed like there was still a lot of woodchips on the ground...

Then I walked around to the other side of the tree and was absolutely amazed by what I saw. The two crazy woodpeckers had carved a canoe up the side of the maple tree in their search for bugs. To give some perspective, the trench is at least 6 inches deep and approximately 20 feet long. It is something that needs to be seen to truly appreciate it.

Ella and I cheering the Canadiens on to a 5-0 romp over the Bruins. Ella is a unique breed of Lab, known as Yellow Butterball Turkey. She is over 80 pounds but makes a nice warm blanket that eventually stops all blood flow to your lower extremeties.

Hmmm...Nate seems a bit perplexed about the concept of sharing.

Why do babies always have to have something in their wee paws? I've noticed as Nate gets older, I care less and less about the inappropriateness of what ever he grabs and stuffs into his maw.

King Henry

Henry came down for a weekend visit and we had the pleasure of hanging out with this sweet little guy twice on Saturday. He has a great personality and is incredibly cute. Nathaniel was enthralled by him and it was fun watching the two of them fight over the same toy. Henry is 5 months older than Nate so it was interesting to have a peek into what the future has in store. We have been pretty excited to get Nate crawling and walking but after a day watching Henry roaring around, I think I might be content with him sitting more or less in the same spot for as long as he wants.

Oh, by the way Lee and Erinn, the general consenus is that a move home is in order so we can spend more time with Henry. Really now, Toronto...Rusagonis...what would you miss? Hee hee!

Addison

This is the newest addition to the Seamans clan, Addison. She is my cousin Mark and his wife Shana's little baby girl. She was born two weeks after Nathaniel and is absolutely gorgeous. I love her eyes! It was great meeting her again and we hope to see more of them!

Go Habs Go!

After such a glorious start to the first game of the play-offs for the Canadiens (2 goals in the first 2 minutes), I had to run upstairs and grab his Habs t-shirt and put it over his pyjamas. I am molding him into a Montreal fan much to Iain's horror and my delight (his team is the Maple Leafs, need I say more) and with the way Montreal played this season and the way Toronto tried to play, Iain doesn't have much of a leg to stand on. Montreal is up 2 - 0 half way through the second period of game 2 with little sign of slowing down.

I love the cockiness of the Montreal crowd-singing to the Bruins at the end of the first period. Confidence is a wonderful thing!

Is That Actually Hair?

I know it is more like a handful than a headful but it's a start. The bald spot on the back is pretty much gone which certainly helps. Check out the little curls that are starting to emerge...hee hee!
